Kotor Destination Wedding

Montenegro · Mediterranean

Kotor sits at the end of the Bay of Kotor — Europe's southernmost fjord — where dramatic mountains plunge into deep blue Adriatic water, and a UNESCO-listed medieval old town with Venetian architecture feels frozen in time. If Dubrovnik is the famous sibling, Kotor is the equally beautiful one that nobody has discovered yet. Wedding costs are roughly half of Dubrovnik, venues are easier to book, and the setting is arguably more dramatic. The bay offers extraordinary ceremony locations including the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks church on its own tiny island.

Legal requirements

⚠️

Most couples do a symbolic ceremony here

Foreigners can legally marry in Montenegro with no residency requirement. You need birth certificates and Certificate of No Impediment (both under 90 days old), translated into Montenegrin, apostilled, and submitted at least 7 days before the ceremony. Passports of both parties and witnesses are required. A certified court interpreter must be present if neither partner speaks Montenegrin. Civil marriages are performed by a registrar. Religious ceremonies alone are not legally binding — a civil wedding must take place first. Given the translation, apostille, and interpreter requirements, some couples prefer a symbolic ceremony.

A symbolic ceremony is just as beautiful — many couples prefer the flexibility it offers.
