Timelines are general guidelines. Specific lead times vary by destination, vendor availability, and season.

Why destination wedding timelines are different

A local wedding can be planned in 6 months. A destination wedding almost always needs 12–18 months — not because there's more to do, but because the logistics compound. Vendors in popular destinations like Cancun, Punta Cana, and Santorini book out fast, legal paperwork has international lead times, and guests need runway to arrange travel.

The photographer problem

The most common regret from destination brides: not booking the photographer early enough. The best destination wedding photographers — especially in Mexico and the Caribbean — book 12–18 months out. If you fall in love with someone's work online, reach out immediately. Don't wait until the venue is confirmed.

Legal vs. symbolic ceremonies

Many popular destinations (Bali, some European countries) only allow symbolic ceremonies for foreign couples. In this case, the legal marriage ceremony happens at home before or after the destination event. This is not a limitation — it actually simplifies things considerably and is completely normal.

Room blocks and guest logistics

If you're inviting 30+ guests, setting up a hotel room block 12 months out is strongly recommended. Blocks secure rooms at a locked rate, give guests a private booking link, and often unlock complimentary perks (upgrades, welcome cocktails, comp rooms). Blocks are typically free to set up and have no financial liability for a courtesy block.
